Who is your favourite player?

The World Cup 2006 is finally here! Teams from different countries have been competing for the title of best football team in the world. Who do you think is going to win?

Your task today is two write a short biography of two of your favourite players. As we've been studying Brazil in geography, you will need to choose one player from the Brazilian Team and one player from the English Team (just follow the links).

Find some personal information such as age, where he comes from and position. You will probably find these facts in a chart-style, but remember that you need to write them in a paragraph using your own words.

Write your biography in a Word document, then go to the Year 6 folder and save it in a new folder called Footballers' Biographies. When writing your text, try to use some other resources, such as columns, for example (go to format and then columns, not forgetting to select line between).

When you finish, feel free to leave a comment about Brazil and England's performance during the World Cup so far.

Did you know that the Amazon is home to the piranha fish?
And it is home to 250 species of mammals, 3000 freshwater fish, and 10,000trees, 70,000 other plant species, 1800 birds, and so many varieties of insects that experts cannot agree on the number. Some say it is 15,000. Others say it is nearer 60 million! New species of wildlife are still being discovered.

Saving the Amazon

Saving the Amazon is very important becauase it has 30% of all wildlife of the world. The Amazon supplies us with 20% of the Earth's oxygen. Last year an area larger than
Wales was cut down. Every hour 2 species of bird are extinct. People have been cutting trees down just to make way for soya fields, so they can make ice-creams, margarines, mayonnaise and even lip-sticks.

Year 6 Trip to Hyde Park

Hello my name is Tyler and I am going to talk about our trip to Hyde Park. Year 6 went to Hyde Park on Wednesday. We went in different groups and visited different parts of the park. The first group went to the pond to study the living things. We caught some minibeasts e.g. snails, dragonflies, leeches and centipedes. We chose a mini beast and we had to draw it and describe it. The other group went to make minibeast models from different materials and they made dragonflies, caterpillars, worms, snails and other types of animals. All of us started to get hungry so we went to a classroom in the park. When we got full up one of the teachers had a football and we started to play football. Our team won. Matthew said we didn’t win so we called it a draw. Then our group went to make minibeasts from: cardboard, grass, stickers, leaves using a gunglue. When we where travelling our teacher was taking pictures of Hyde Park and of us. It was wicked. We had to go back to school on a train. Everyone had fun.

Model making

Hello we are Israa and Ramseena. In the afternoon of the the trip to Hyde Park we made minibeast models. We looked for same materials in the grass to use them for the models. We found grass, sticks and leaves. Then we start to make our models. We made a dragonfly. Dragonflies have six legs, four wings, green and blue body. For the body we used sticks and for the wings we used dry leaves. All the models are on display in the classroom. These are some models we made.

HABITATS
The habitat of a shark is sea and deep water, sharks live in open water which they can hunt their prey. Sharks have big,powerful teeth to keep hold of their prey.

The squirrels live in nests in the trees,They hunt for nuts and they hibernate in winter.

The worms live in the soil in your gardens,worms eat little insects in the earth.

The rats live in sewers and bins and they are much bigger than mice.

The camels live in the desert and are able to store water in their humps for up to 3 weeks.

What Affects The Germination Of Pea Seeds?

We in year 6 have been investigating what affects the germination of pea seeds.This is the equipment we needed:4 plastic cups,20 pea seeds,a measuring cylinder,water and soil.we only changed : the temperature the seeds were in ,the amount of light we gave them and amount of water they had.

We predicted that the cup on the window will grow the quickest because it had all of the requirements it needed.The experiment is not complete yet over the next fortnight we will be observing the seeds growth and will publish another post when the end-product of this experiment.

Learning Science by making bread

Today we had a brilliant day at St Luke's. Year 5 and Year 6 decided to learn more about micro-organisms and bacteria by making bread! We learned that yeast is a fungus which needs sugar to grow. In groups we mixed the ingredients, made the dough and each one ended up with two rolls. We baked the bread rolls in the middle room between years 5 and 6 and our classroom smelled lovely. Tomorrow morning we will have a shared breakfast after assembly. We all had a great time today.

Why don't you try to make some bread at home? It's very easy. Tyrell wrote the recipe for you. Enjoy it!

HOW TO MAKE BREAD ROLLS:

1. FIRSTLY PREHEAT THE OVEN FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES.

2. DON’T FORGET TO WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU MAKE THE DOUGH!

3. SECONDLY POUR
500g OF STRONG WHITE FLOUR
25g OF BUTTER
1TSP OF YEAST
1TSP OF WHITE SUGAR
1TSP OF MILK POWDER
300ML OF WARM WATER
AND 1TSP OF SALT INTO A MIXING BOWL

4. MIX ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS INTO EACH OTHER WITH YOUR HANDS FOR ABOUT FIVE MINUTES.

5. USE A BIT MORE WATER ON THE DOUGH.

6. SPEAD FLOUR OVER THE TABLE SO WHEN IT COMES TO SHAPING THE DOUGH IT WON’T STICK TO THE TABLE.

7.PUT THE DOUGH ON THE TABLE WITH THE FLOUR.

8.THEN SHAPE THE DOUGH INTO A BALL.

9.DIG HOLES IN THE DOUGH TO HELP THE YEAST RISE.

10.PUT IT IN THE OVEN AT 200 degrees GAS MARK 4 FOR 20 – 25 MINUTES.

Friction on Different Surfaces

Hi my name is Kimon and I am 10 years old. My favorite sport is football and my favorite colour is red.

In Science we have been measuring the friction on different surfarces: carpet, table and concrete (playgroung). We used a newtometer to measure the force needed to pull a tray. The things that we had to keep the same were the newtometer, the same tray and the same distance (1m) . The result that we got was that the friction on the carpet was 2.6 newtons, the table was 1 newton and the playgroung was 2.6 newtons.

The conclusion that we came to was that the rougher the surface the more friction you get and this was because it's harder to move the object on a rough surface.

Hi my name is Timmy. I've have just started at St Lukes and I'm enjoying it very much. I am eleven years old and I love rugby. Killer Sharks

There are more than 350 species of sharks in the ocean. But I’m only going to tell you about two of the most deadliest sharks to ever roam the ocean. They are the Hammerhead and the king the Great White Shark. First I’m going to tell you about the hammerhead before you go running under your nearest sofa.

It is called the hammerhead because its head is shaped like a hammer. It is quite dangerous because it will knock you out by throwing its head and it could hit you. Now for the real test if I put a stack of bricks next to each side of its head it would brake it. The hammer head is a great shark to learn about.

Hello, our names are Saffron and Meryam. We are both ten years old and best friends. We have a new teacher called miss Rushworth. She is a very good teacher and pretty. Meryam and I like her a lot.
This term we have been learning about India. My class will be making Indian food and performing a play of India. Children in India make their classrooms into a dinner hall. The most popular food in India is rice and curry. The bread and the chickpeas on this picture were from an Indian market.

Hello our names are Azmi (11), and Michael (10), and we are currently studying India. We have a new teacher called Miss Rushworth and we have started a new term this week. Here are some of the things we have learnt so far.
There are lots of rubies in India. India has a population of 1.1 billion and its capital city is New Delhi. The life expectancy in India is 62 years (Men),65 years (Women). The major languages are Hindi, English and 17 others, and the major religions are Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism.
Monetary unit: 1 Indian rupee = 100 paise. The main exports are Agricultural products, textile goods, gems and jewellery, software services and technology, engineering goods, chemicals and leather products.

Black History Month

Hello my name is Hamza and we've been studying Ruby Bridges for black history month in St Lukes school. Ruby Bridges was born in the south Mississippi in America, 1954. Ruby had to be walked into school by five bodyguards to make sure that racist people wouldn't try to hurt her.
Her mum would walk with her to school, too. White parents took their children out of the school until Ruby stopped going to the white people school. But Ruby did not stop going to the school. Ruby's teacher was Ms. Barbara Henry. Ms. Henry loved Ruby very much. Ruby was the only black child in her class.

We've also made some power point presentations about Ruby's life.

The Floating Classroom

Today we had a lovely day on board the Beauchamp, a canal boat operated as a floating classroom in Little Venice, West London. We learned interesting facts about the Regent's Canal and how useful it was 185 years ago when it was built. We discovered how engineers at that time built the tunnels of the canal and how the arches that support these tunnels were constructed. We even had the chance to make a miniature arch ourselves, as you can see in the picture.

After that we visited the construction site of the new Paddington Bridge. This is a significant project for London, part of the wider regeneration of the Paddington area and it will benefit the local community enormously. Everyone was very impressed with the massive structures of the project.

Today we all had a fantastic afternoon! We had some guests who helped us learn the downsides of using drugs and how we can learn to make good choices. First we saw a dynamic and educational play which was followed by a brilliant discussion about the different kinds of drugs, their effects and that we always have the choice to say NO. More about Shakespeare

We are still learning about Shakespeare's life and literary work. One of our tasks last week was to listen carefully to some important facts of Shakespeare's life, take notes and then write our own texts using the information we've been collecting throughout the week about the author.
That specific task was very important because it helped us improve our listening skills and also develop our ability to take notes and use them to write a text.

Some pupils of our class did very well and they came up with very good visual texts. Well done, year 6!

Shakespeare's Biography

My name is Matthew and I have been studying William Shakespeare in my class.

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564.Williams parents were John and Mary Shakespeare. In 1666 Williams brother Gilbert was born. William went to school in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the exact same place that he lived. At the age of 18 Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway and a year later their first child Suzanna was born and another year later Anne had twins named Hamnet and Judith soon on Shakespeare moved to London and left his family behind. By then Shakespeare was 30 and had written many plays, but sadly in 1595 Williams son Hamnet died but Shakespeare moved on and carried on writing plays. But the tragedies didn't stop there because in 1600 Shakespeares father died and as I said he carried on writing and by that time Shakespeare had written many more plays including Julius Caeser and Romeo and Juliet. In 1610 Shakespeare was 46 and moved back to his hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon. Shakespeare had spent six years with family and on his birthday he died the precise date is April 23, 1616 and was buried in his hometown 2 days later. Anne had outlived her husband by 7 years she died in 1623 the same year that the first collection of Shakespeares plays were published. Strange huh.
