Learning Science by making bread

Today we had a brilliant day at St Luke's. Year 5 and Year 6 decided to learn more about micro-organisms and bacteria by making bread! We learned that yeast is a fungus which needs sugar to grow. In groups we mixed the ingredients, made the dough and each one ended up with two rolls. We baked the bread rolls in the middle room between years 5 and 6 and our classroom smelled lovely. Tomorrow morning we will have a shared breakfast after assembly. We all had a great time today.

HOW TO MAKE BREAD ROLLS:

1. FIRSTLY PREHEAT THE OVEN FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES.

2. DON’T FORGET TO WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU MAKE THE DOUGH!

3. SECONDLY POUR
500g OF STRONG WHITE FLOUR
25g OF BUTTER
1TSP OF YEAST
1TSP OF WHITE SUGAR
1TSP OF MILK POWDER
300ML OF WARM WATER
AND 1TSP OF SALT INTO A MIXING BOWL

4. MIX ALL OF THE INGREDIENTS INTO EACH OTHER WITH YOUR HANDS FOR ABOUT FIVE MINUTES.

5. USE A BIT MORE WATER ON THE DOUGH.

6. SPEAD FLOUR OVER THE TABLE SO WHEN IT COMES TO SHAPING THE DOUGH IT WON’T STICK TO THE TABLE.

7.PUT THE DOUGH ON THE TABLE WITH THE FLOUR.

8.THEN SHAPE THE DOUGH INTO A BALL.

9.DIG HOLES IN THE DOUGH TO HELP THE YEAST RISE.

10.PUT IT IN THE OVEN AT 200 degrees GAS MARK 4 FOR 20 – 25 MINUTES.
